Matcha Cafe Maiko is the Atlanta outpost of the Kyoto-born chain that made its name importing ceremonial-grade matcha directly from Uji, the Japanese town that has been growing the country's most revered matcha for nearly a thousand years. The Buford Highway location is, by some margin, the only dedicated storefront matcha cafe in metro Atlanta — which is a surprising sentence to write about a city with hundreds of boba shops, and a useful one to know.
The menu runs in the expected directions but executes them at a level the coffee-shop "matcha latte" trend hasn't caught up to. Iced and hot matcha lattes served unsweetened or adjusted to taste. Matcha soft serve that actually tastes like matcha (bright, faintly astringent, green like real chlorophyll). Shaved ice topped with red bean and condensed milk. A small pastry case of Japanese-forward sweets. The non-matcha side (hojicha, genmaicha, a handful of fruit teas) is handled with the same seriousness.
The space is clean, small, and Buford Highway in character — a strip-plaza front door, a compact counter, enough seating to have a conversation, and an obvious Asian-American and student regular base. Open until 10pm daily (10:30 on weekends) makes it one of the few late-night tea options in town.
Practical notes: Cash and card accepted. Plaza parking is fine. If you're new to matcha, start with the Maiko Latte hot — it's the clearest read on what ceremonial-grade actually tastes like before sugar. Soft serve with a shot of espresso poured over the top is a locally popular move.
